Airbag Promo introduces SOUTHERN EXTREMITY (German)

Bandvorstellung: Southern Extremity
Katy | 21. May 2009

SOUTHERN EXTREMITY Interview for Sinister Facts

The following interview was posted by Phylicia of Sinister Facts at the link below

http://www.sinisterfacts.com/index.php?pagina=interviewsshow&iid=19

What are your names:

SOUTHERN EXTREMITY is Jason Tierney (vocals, guitar), Andreas Eder (bass), Martin Leimgruber (drums).

What are your birthdates:

Our individual dates of birth will remain unknown, at least for now :) Our band photo will of course indicate roughly how old we are!

Where do you live:

We live in and around a small city called Meran which is situated in the alps of northern Italy. I (Jason) have been here for 6 years now and have been living in Europe since 1998. (also in England, Germany and Austria). Originally I'm from Australia. Both of my band mates are from here (Italy).

Do you have a religion, and what is your religion:

Almost everyone is born into some religion or other and that's something I'd rather not discuss. I'm here to write about the music.

What is the style you play (how people describe):

Black metal, extreme metal

How would you call the style you play:

Our music has influences from both black and death metal and so we refer to it as extreme metal. Although, our new songs are tending more towards black metal so we'll just have to wait and see where we get pigeon holed by the experts! :)

How did you begin loving the music style(was it something you heard on the Internet or did you hear it from friends):

Our music has evolved into extreme metal through not only our passion for the extreme genres of music, but mainly due to Martin's (drummer) passion for drumming. He just keeps getting faster and playing more and more complicated things. We have 2 slow songs on our debut full length and if you were to ask him that's almost too many! He's not really into playing slow. \m/

How did you meet the band:

The band met, as usual in my case, coincidentally. I've been wandering around Europe for 11 years now and everything up to where I am today has happened coincidentally. Lucky for me because I couldn't have planned it better! I've met not only people who like my songs and want to play them but have also made the best of friends. Like I said, it couldn't be better!

How many albums do you have? and what are the titles?:

We have 1 album entitled HYMNS OF DARKNESS AND HATE which we recorded ourselves in Martin's basement in Jan/ Feb 2009. I really wanted to record our debut album ourselves because the debut is always something special and even more so if you've done it yourself! For the next CD though, we'll probably go into the studio because the money will be, what you might say 'lacking', for some new studio equipment.

'Hymns of Darkness and Hate' has been online since March but actually we only just received the CD's last tuesday (12.5.09).

What was the first song you ever played in your life:

The first song I ever played in my life was one I wrote myself. Since picking up a guitar all I've done is write songs. I've played a few cover songs along the way but for some reason I never really followed that path.

What was the first song you played for the band:

The first song that we wrote was 'Overture in Ice'. All of our songs are the result of improvisation. If we have a very creative session we may have a song roughly put together within a few hours. On other occasions I've had riffs in my head for 6 months before finding another riff that fits how I want it to. We like to let the music just flow when writing songs. If it doesn't we'll play the set list through and leave it for the day after.

What is your favorite song to play:

My favourite song to play is probably 'Worlds Apart' because somehow I get into screaming those lyrics out a bit more than on other songs. That's a very difficult question. Smouldering Earth Adrift also comes to mind.

What are the songs about:

A quote from our website answers that question in a nutshell."The lyrics provide a damning outlook on life as we know it".

I've written the lyrics in such a way that they tell a story within the 10 songs. In the CD booklet they're arranged into the right order so that if someone were to read from top to bottom, the story would unfold. This is not the running order of the songs on the CD!

If you could change something in the band what would you change:

What would I change in the band? I can't think of anything important that needs changing.

Is metal going to take over the national TV:

TV in these parts is a disaster and therefore I don't watch it. It'd certainly be nice for metal to have a bigger presence on it.

Do you like touring:

Southern Extremity was formed in August 2008 and has not yet been on tour so I'll have to answer that question another time.

So what’s next, in the future:

Playing music, writing songs and getting a few gigs. That'll do for starters. :) \m/

Southern Extremity on the Legion of Tchort Comp. CD#6

The first ever Southern Extremity demo song 'Worlds Apart' appears on the Legion of Tchort compilation CD #6. This song was recorded in October 08 and appears re-recorded on the debut full length 'Hymns of Darkness and Hate'. For this reason the demo version will no longer be available and seemingly now remains an exclusive for The Legion of Tchort!
