Southern Extremity interview with The Legion of Tchort

Originally posted by Tchort at http://thelegionoftchortzine.blogspot.com/2009/11/southern-extremity-italy_20.html

Southern Extremity (Italy)

T: Jason the band did a cool promotion with your promo Cd Southern Extremity song Worlds Apart, great marketing for the band before your Cd came out. How many copies did you send for this work?

Southern Extremity: This was a very limited Cd that was sent to Magazines and Webzines around the world. Friends and fans also have copies but since the release of the full length we've stopped using it for promo purposes.

T: When did your Cd Southern Extremity – “Hymns of Darkness and Hate” come out? Many people have an idea of the sound of the band, very technical and brutal with an extreme voice? How was it reviewed in the Press?

Southern Extremity: The Cd came out in March 2009 and has been described similarly to how you've described it yourself. It's a combination of black metal and extreme metal basically.
Some reviewers haven't been very supportive of our production of the Cd. Nowadays we've got people writing "well when you get a black metal Cd in the post you'd be hoping for a good production." I just thought "WHAT??" Since when has black metal been about production? We recorded the Cd ourselves in the basement on an 8 track recorder. That's the spirit of black metal. Our aim was to capture the raw energy that the music itself achieves and I think we've done a pretty good job.

T: In what other Compilations or Splits does Southern Extremity appear?

Southern Extremity: We've had different tracks appear on the following compilations- De Umbris Zine, Powerplay Magazine Sampler, Imperative Music, Death Star Records and Spine Language.

T: I read that the song that appears in my compilation “The Legion Of TchorT” # 6 is an exclusive of your demo version? (Thanks for this Jason)

Southern Extremity: Yes, that's the first recording we made of the track and it was immediately sent for inclusion on your compilation. Since then it's been re-recorded for the full length so therefore the demo version won't appear on any future compilations. That makes it an exclusive for The Legion of TchorT.

T: Jason, you have other side projects- Lore of Ages in Australia and Remnants of Tranquility in Italy, tell me more please about these bands?

Southern Extremity: Remnants of Tranquility is an acoustic project created by Martin and I. We both play guitar and sing although Martin plays drums in Southern Extremity. I wanted to create a dark sound acoustically, and I think the song "Traces" achieves that quite well.
This band was formed previous to Southern Extremity while we were still active with the metal band Szin. At the time the drummer in the band (not Martin. In the band Szin Martin and I were both on vocals, guitar) had injured himself and everything was on hold. I started writing acoustic songs and we played these for months before the drummer had recovered. We decided to record a few and upload them to myspace.

Lore of Ages is my own side project which is an ambient/ atmospheric combination of electric guitars and clean vocals. No drums, no bass. The songs were written while we were recording the Southern Extremity Cd and recorded thereafter. "Reflections of the Past" is the first album with 4 tracks lasting 37 minutes. The myspace page is listed as Australian because I'm Australian. I'm still living in Italy though.

Also, just recently I founded the death metal side project Sadoplague. Once again I had a bit of extra time on my hands and decided to write in a death metal direction. Just after I'd finished the first song I was asked if I'd like to record a mini album for an upcoming split cassette. So what was done just as a bit of fun quickly turned into a project of its own. The mini album entitled "Cruel and Twisted Trips to Nowhere" was recorded and sent to Self Cannibalism Productions and was just released in October on the 3 way split with Fleischwald and Blenorrhagical Spermatocystitis.

T: Southern Extremity- are all songs on the Cd part of one theme?

Southern Extremity: Lyrically, yes. When reading through the lyrics in the booklet they've been arranged in the order in which they tell a story from beginning to end. This is not the running order of the songs on the Cd!
Musically there is a strong black metal presence accompanied occasionally by more typical metal influences. Extreme metal also makes a contribution.

T: When I listen to the Promo Cd, I say shit! The very extreme death metal drummer is a special touch for the band? Do you think it characterizes the band?

Southern Extremity: Certainly, Martin is a very talented musician and drumming is his passion. It's really quite amazing what he comes up with and he's getting faster and extremer all the time. The new songs we're working on at the moment are really going to be something special from a drummers point of view. It'll be interesting to see how they've developed by the time we want to record them next year.

T: Your band is appearing on the UNHOLY TRINITY (3-way split series) THY GATHERING III by KVLT666 Prod from Malaysia, can you say with which songs?

Southern Extremity: Worlds Apart, Overture in Ice and Amongst Chaos will be on the split. That will also be a limited edition and we're really looking forward to it's release.

T: Please tell me more about your merchandise for all the headbangers supporting the band who want to buy original stuff.

Southern Extremity: Cd's and T-Shirts are available for all projects except Remnants of Tranquility. The myspace pages have a mini Paypal shop where they can be purchased. Southern Extremity also has the same products available from the official website listed below.

T: Any Last Words for our readers Brother?

AEA zine review issue #15

SOUTHERN EXTREMITY Hymns Of Darkness And Hate

Southern Extremity is an extreme black/death metal band originating from Italy, named after what might be if the northern extremity was known as heaven. Since forming in 2008 they unleashed a handful of promo releases which received some favorable reviews, including their CD demo Worlds Apart. Their first full length recording Hymns Of Darkness And Hate is an exercise in primal guitar progressions, inspired partly early Norse and Swedish black metal with shades of brutal death metal, persistent blast beats and demonic high pitched vocals giving an impression of a fresh corpse crawling from a pine box. What you can expect from this recording is an endless onslaught of rawness and intensity, abrasive and hypnotically repetitive on several occasions, blending brutality and misanthropy at the core of the songwriting. The varying degrees of blast throughout the CD is easily convincing while Southern Extremity slow toward even deeper nihilism on some songs. All ten tracks from Hymns Of Darkness And Hate can be heard at Southern Extremity’s MySpace profile and website. -Dave Wolff

Band name explanation!

Occasionally I'm asked about the band name and so I've taken an excerpt from the De Umbris Zine interview I did to explain it.

01 First of all, I’m really curious about the band’s name! It’s rather an unusual name for a black metal
band. Can you explain how you chose that and if there’s a message you want to send through that
name?

The band name needed to represent our impression of the music we're creating and the darkness within it. Since the darkside is ultimately defined by Hell we decided that a name discretely portraying hell would suit perfectly. The band name explanation is the first thing any visitor to the website reads and states quite simply-
If the northern extremity were referred to as "Heaven"... SOUTHERN EXTREMITY
The only message contained in the name is the description of our type of music.

Southern Extremity: Interview
by ©Scarlet: www.scarletmetal.com

Scarlet: Greetings Southern Extremity, where are you from and just how does your present environment influence your music?

Jason: Greetings!!! SOUTHERN EXTREMITY is an extreme metal band consisting of Jason Tierney (vocals, guitar), Martin Leimgruber (drums) and Andreas Eder (bass) and is based in Marling, Italy.
Marling is a small town just outside the city of Meran, which belongs to the province Bolzano in the northern alps of Italy. This is Martin's home town, Andreas is from Algund about 10 minutes away and I'm from Australia. Right from the beginning, when all I knew was that I wanted to make music, I realized that firstly I needed to find a suitable environment for me personally. I've found that here in the Italian alps and now with the formation of SOUTHERN EXTREMITY in August 2008 I'm fulfilling my plans of writing songs in my favourite genre of music- black metal. Here I've found not only the right musicians but also good friends and that have made it the ideal songwriting environment for me. The influence it has had on the music can be heard on our debut home recorded album 'Hymns of Darkness and Hate'.

Scarlet: Would you please tell me about the early musical influences of each band member?

Jason: Alrighty then, this could take a while :) I could ramble on all day about music, my favourite bands and all the concerts I've been to. Well, the first metal band anyone got into back then at school was AC/DC. Then along came Iron Maiden with the legendary Live After Death double LP. I must've listened to that album for at least 6 months without taking that tape out of my walkman. Those were the days hey?! For anyone who doesn't know what a walkman is, it's like on old school MP3 player that ran on giant double A batteries and played cassettes. Hmmm cassettes, the other format that accompanied vinyl in the record stores before CD's came along. I think I'm sidetracking here, where was I? Slayer!!!! Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Metallica, Morbid Angel, Obituary and many others. Then came the Norwegian black metal scene of the early 90's. I found that more interesting than anything ever before. Martin, being a few years younger than I am, found that Alice in Chains pointed him in the right direction, leading naturally to heavier and extremer drumming according to his own progress and experience, and eventually to the black metal scene and ultimately Mayhem!! Andreas' early influences were Napalm Death, Obituary, Sepultura and Death. Grindcore is to this day one of his favourites, culminating in his own solo project Fleischwald.

Scarlet: Which metal bands still influence the direction of your music today?

Jason: Mayhem, Immortal, Nile, just to name a few. Actually in the world of drumming it's very interesting to even stray a little from the metal scene. Drummers like Jo Jo Mayer, Thomas Lang, the late Buddy Rich are amazingly inspiring. That being said I only need to listen to a Mayhem CD and I'll be craving time behind the kit. I really enjoy playing drums but that's Martin's job so I rarely get chance these days.

Scarlet: Who wrote the lyrics to 'Hymns of Darkness and Hate' and what are some of the things about the world we live in that inspire your lyrics?

Jason: I wrote the lyrics for all the tracks. When writing I'm usually inspired by the darker side of life, namely death. Death and the realms beyond. We've all seen the complexities and contradictions of life and there's plenty to write about, e.g. nuclear devastation is the topic of 'Smouldering Earth Adrift'. 'Worlds Apart' discusses what "peace" is when faith has a bigger say, and 'Amongst Chaos' dwells upon man's own battle with the demons within himself. Ultimately death is waiting for us all and 'Nonentity' explores those realms.

Scarlet: At this time your music is an interesting hybrid of death metal and black metal, how did you evolve into your current style?

Jason: Our music evolved over a period of time that began even before SOUTHERN EXTREMITY came into existence. Martin (drums) used to play guitar with me in our previous band SZIN which was a slow metal band and on occasions he would get behind the drum kit and we'd just improvise. He's played drums for a long time and when combined with the predominantly black metal riffs I played, it was just natural for him to play fast. Some of these riffs are on 'HYMNS OF DARKNESS AND HATE' e.g. the first riff of 'Worlds Apart', the second riff of 'Overture in Ice' and even the whole song 'Undone' has been "re-done"! Basically the guitars have stayed the same but the drums are completely new. It was lacking blastbeats before and now they're in abundance :) Once we'd decided Martin was going to take over on drums it was clear we needed a new band name and new songs. This album is where we're at mid 2009.

Scarlet: How does your band feel about playing live shows and festivals? Are you all in agreement about playing 'live'?

Jason: Yes, we're all in agreement about playing live and are really looking forward to it. Since forming we've been busy writing and recording the album. Now that's finished we can drop by the local clubs and line up some gigs.

Scarlet: Exactly why is the preservation of the metal underground important to you personally?

Jason: It's important for people to have an outlet for their creativity. The metal underground provides that for both musicians and listeners alike. As it exists "online" it's established and expanding. Its preservation is basically only an issue on the live scene. Problems vary from place to place but as they exist here in the province of Bolzano we've seen the decrease of clubs willing to present live bands due to the ever increasing cost involved. Nevertheless there's still quite a good scene and good bands but compared to only 5 years ago there are clearly less gig opportunities.

Scarlet: Do you believe that the future of all metal would be better off if it were totally uncommercialized?

Jason: No. I know what you mean though. The old days of tape trading or finding a rare LP at a market are fading away. Back then there wasn't much publicity for metal at all, unless of course it was bad publicity. The scene thrived solely in the underground. Those few who are keeping the tradition alive by releasing cassettes are truly worthy of praise. The good thing about commercialism is that it's made such a huge audience for metal that now even black metal has a massive worldwide following. I know that the purists would have preferred the black metal scene to have stayed underground where it belongs and they do have a point. But that's all in the past now. Metal, where it stands today, provides countless bands with the opportunity to be heard. And that brings us to the next problem. With so many bands now on the scene how do you get heard? My theory lies within the music itself. Bands must be providing the best songs they can possibly produce! Obviously the major labels will sell you any old rubbish so bands have to decide for themselves which path they're willing to take.

Scarlet: Why did you name the band Southern Extremity and does it have any special meaning?

Jason: The band name is explained on the enter page of the website as follows, "If the northern extremity were referred to as 'Heaven'... SOUTHERN EXTREMITY. Basically what I was looking for in a band name was a different way of referring to Hell. Southern Extremity seemed to me to do the job perfectly.

Scarlet: Thanks for your time and I leave the final exit to you.

Jason: Thanks very much for the interview and for helping us reach more extreme metal fans. For anyone wanting to hear the album, head over to www.southernextremity.com It's also available as a free download for mailing list members so sign up now!

SOUTHERN EXTREMITY Interview for Sinister Facts

The following interview was posted by Phylicia of Sinister Facts at the link below

http://www.sinisterfacts.com/index.php?pagina=interviewsshow&iid=19

What are your names:

SOUTHERN EXTREMITY is Jason Tierney (vocals, guitar), Andreas Eder (bass), Martin Leimgruber (drums).

What are your birthdates:

Our individual dates of birth will remain unknown, at least for now :) Our band photo will of course indicate roughly how old we are!

Where do you live:

We live in and around a small city called Meran which is situated in the alps of northern Italy. I (Jason) have been here for 6 years now and have been living in Europe since 1998. (also in England, Germany and Austria). Originally I'm from Australia. Both of my band mates are from here (Italy).

Do you have a religion, and what is your religion:

Almost everyone is born into some religion or other and that's something I'd rather not discuss. I'm here to write about the music.

What is the style you play (how people describe):

Black metal, extreme metal

How would you call the style you play:

Our music has influences from both black and death metal and so we refer to it as extreme metal. Although, our new songs are tending more towards black metal so we'll just have to wait and see where we get pigeon holed by the experts! :)

How did you begin loving the music style(was it something you heard on the Internet or did you hear it from friends):

Our music has evolved into extreme metal through not only our passion for the extreme genres of music, but mainly due to Martin's (drummer) passion for drumming. He just keeps getting faster and playing more and more complicated things. We have 2 slow songs on our debut full length and if you were to ask him that's almost too many! He's not really into playing slow. \m/

How did you meet the band:

The band met, as usual in my case, coincidentally. I've been wandering around Europe for 11 years now and everything up to where I am today has happened coincidentally. Lucky for me because I couldn't have planned it better! I've met not only people who like my songs and want to play them but have also made the best of friends. Like I said, it couldn't be better!

How many albums do you have? and what are the titles?:

We have 1 album entitled HYMNS OF DARKNESS AND HATE which we recorded ourselves in Martin's basement in Jan/ Feb 2009. I really wanted to record our debut album ourselves because the debut is always something special and even more so if you've done it yourself! For the next CD though, we'll probably go into the studio because the money will be, what you might say 'lacking', for some new studio equipment.

'Hymns of Darkness and Hate' has been online since March but actually we only just received the CD's last tuesday (12.5.09).

What was the first song you ever played in your life:

The first song I ever played in my life was one I wrote myself. Since picking up a guitar all I've done is write songs. I've played a few cover songs along the way but for some reason I never really followed that path.

What was the first song you played for the band:

The first song that we wrote was 'Overture in Ice'. All of our songs are the result of improvisation. If we have a very creative session we may have a song roughly put together within a few hours. On other occasions I've had riffs in my head for 6 months before finding another riff that fits how I want it to. We like to let the music just flow when writing songs. If it doesn't we'll play the set list through and leave it for the day after.

What is your favorite song to play:

My favourite song to play is probably 'Worlds Apart' because somehow I get into screaming those lyrics out a bit more than on other songs. That's a very difficult question. Smouldering Earth Adrift also comes to mind.

What are the songs about:

A quote from our website answers that question in a nutshell."The lyrics provide a damning outlook on life as we know it".

I've written the lyrics in such a way that they tell a story within the 10 songs. In the CD booklet they're arranged into the right order so that if someone were to read from top to bottom, the story would unfold. This is not the running order of the songs on the CD!

If you could change something in the band what would you change:

What would I change in the band? I can't think of anything important that needs changing.

Is metal going to take over the national TV:

TV in these parts is a disaster and therefore I don't watch it. It'd certainly be nice for metal to have a bigger presence on it.

Do you like touring:

Southern Extremity was formed in August 2008 and has not yet been on tour so I'll have to answer that question another time.

So what’s next, in the future:

Playing music, writing songs and getting a few gigs. That'll do for starters. :) \m/

Southern Extremity on this months Powerplay magazine compilation CD

Hello again! This blog is to announce that our song 'Amongst Chaos' appears on this months issue of Powerplay magazine! We're honoured to be featured by Powerplay on their latest CD alongside bands like Sepultura and Kreator. It's even more amazing for me personally because it's not long ago I was living in London and following the metal scene through Powerplay, Metal Hammer, Terrorizor, Kerrang and whichever other metal mags I could find. At the time I never even gave it a thought that one day my band would be featured on one of those compilations. Stoked man, thanks!

Recording Drums!

Hi again and welcome to the next instalment from Southern Extremity. I've finally found time to write an update amongst the long hours of recording. We've been working hard getting the drum tracks recorded and now have 8 of the 10 album tracks down. I can assure you Martin's come up with some exceptional material on these tracks. If you've just discovered Southern Extremity you can visit www.southernextremity.com for a sample of his drumming.
